A little care, season by season.

General guidance for Nepal’s seasons. Every spot is different, so always check the soil before watering: if it’s still damp, wait.

Scroll to move through the year.

March to May

Spring

Water regularly

Days warm up quickly and the sun gets strong. Plants wake up and start growing.

Where
A sunny windowsill or open balcony. Move winter plants back outside a few hours more each day.
Water
Soak until it drains, then wait until the soil is completely dry: roughly every 7–14 days.
Watch for
Stretching toward the window means it wants more light. From May, give afternoon shade in hot spells.

The best time to repot, into fresh, gritty soil.

June to September

Monsoon

Water a little

Warm, humid and often cloudy. The risk now is wet roots, not thirst.

Where
Under cover: a bright window or covered balcony where rain can’t reach the pots.
Water
Only when the soil is completely dry, roughly every 2–3 weeks. Empty the saucers.
Watch for
Soft, yellow or see-through leaves and dark stems are signs of rot. Keep air moving.

Terracotta and gritty soil help pots dry out between waterings.

October to November

Autumn

Water a little

Clear skies, mild days and cooler nights. Many succulents colour up beautifully.

Where
Back to the sunniest spots: an open balcony or bright windowsill.
Water
Soak when dry, roughly every 10–14 days, a little less often as nights cool.
Watch for
Colder nights from November. Start planning a sunny indoor spot for winter.

Cool, bright days bring out red and pink tips.

December to February

Winter

Water very little

Sunny days, cold nights, and frost in the valleys. Most succulents rest.

Where
Your sunniest indoor window, away from heaters and cold glass after dark.
Water
Every 3–4 weeks for most succulents, once a month or less for cacti. Water in the morning.
Watch for
Slightly wrinkled leaves are normal while resting. Mushy leaves mean too much water or cold.

No feeding until spring.
